This spring, we had the honor of creating something truly special: the Spring for Xena photography sessions. This initiative brings families together, celebrates connection, and supports a bright little girl who has captured all of our hearts.
If you haven't yet heard about Xena’s story, Castanet recently shared an update on the incredible community support rallying behind her family. You can read the full article here: South Okanagan community continues to help raise funds for four-year-old girl battling leukemia.
Meet Xena
In February 2025, four-year-old Xena from Summerland was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Initially, she was being treated for what was thought to be Influenza A. Her diagnosis turned her family's world upside down. Her parents, Kathleen and Stefano, temporarily relocated to Vancouver so Xena could undergo treatment at BC Children’s Hospital.
Their strength, resilience, and deep love for their daughter have been awe-inspiring. It’s been incredible to see how our community has come together to support them through this unimaginable journey.
How Spring for Xena Was Born
After photographing sessions in support of other families navigating childhood cancer journeys — including beautiful Rosie, who battled leukemia last year — we wanted to do something special for Xena’s family as well.
The Spring for Xena sessions were designed not only to raise funds but to celebrate life, hope, and the connections that carry us through tough times. With the beautiful setting of Heaven’s Gate Winery and stunning florals donated by Bella Vita Flowers, we built a space full of spring magic. Families booked mini sessions surrounded by blossoms and golden light, with proceeds going directly to support Xena’s care and her family’s living expenses while away from home.
It’s hard to put into words how moving it was to see families show up. They not only created memories of their own but stood beside another family in love and solidarity. Every photograph taken, every donation made, and every moment shared felt like stitching together a giant quilt of hope for Xena.
Community in Action
As reported by Castanet, the Summerland and broader South Okanagan community has rallied for Xena in an incredible way. From bake sales to bottle drives, and fundraising events like ours, it's clear: when one of us needs support, we show up.
Ongoing Support
Xena’s family continues to need assistance as they face months of ongoing treatment, travel, and medical expenses. If you feel moved to contribute, donations can be made directly through Xena’s GoFundMe page. Your support can make a significant difference in their lives.
The Power of Togetherness
The love that has emerged from this initiative shows us the power of togetherness. When we come together for a cause, we generate hope and resilience. Each one of us holds a piece of the puzzle that, when put together, creates a beautiful picture of community and love.
Making Memories
Our sessions are more than just photography; they’re a way to capture affection, unity, and the joy of life. Each click of the camera preserves not just an image but a story, an emotion, and a commitment to stand strong beside one another.
Thank You
A heartfelt thank you to Bella Vita Flowers for donating their artistry, and to Heaven’s Gate Winery for welcoming us into their beautiful vineyard. A huge thanks also goes out to every family who booked a session, shared a post, or simply sent good thoughts Xena’s way. You are all part of this story. You are a part of the light.
And to Xena: your bravery inspires more people than you know. We are all rooting for you, sweet girl.
With love, Deanna
