How I Use AI Tools in My Photography Business

Behind the lens with Deanna
One of the questions I get asked during sessions — usually by the tech-savvy husbands — is, “Do you use AI in your business?” Right after that comes, “Aren’t you worried it’s going to put photographers out of work?”
Fair questions — and ones I hear often enough that I figured it was time to write a blog about it. That way, next time someone asks, I can just say, “Great question! I actually wrote a blog on it — here, check it out.” (Work smarter, right? 😉)
The truth is, I do use AI tools at Deanna Dunham Designs, but not in the way some might expect. These tools aren’t replacing my creativity or connection with clients — they’re just helping me behind the scenes so I can run things more smoothly and show up more fully for the parts of this work I love.
Here’s how I’m currently using AI:
1. AI Culling for Faster Selections
After a session, I might have hundreds (or thousands!) of images to sort through. I use AI culling software to flag the obviously missed shots — like blurred frames, closed eyes, or duplicates. It helps narrow the selection so I can get to the good stuff faster.
Is it perfect? Not at all. I still do the final review myself. But it makes that first sweep a lot more efficient, and that means quicker turnaround times for you.
2. Market Research and Business Strategy
I also use AI tools to help with market research — whether that’s identifying session trends, checking out local competitor offerings, or exploring what types of shoots people are searching for. It’s like having a data assistant who works way faster than I ever could.
3. Website and Brand Messaging Audits
AI has helped me take a step back and review my own website with fresh eyes. I’ve used it to check if my messaging is clear, consistent, and still reflects my voice and brand. When you’re close to your own work, a bit of distance (even if it’s digital!) helps.
4. Writing and Editing Support
Blogs like this one, marketing materials, session prep guides, and even emails all get a little AI polish. I use it to help organize thoughts, suggest stronger wording, and make sure everything flows — but rest assured, the final edit is always mine. The warmth, the humor, and the heart? That’s all me.
5. Image Critique and Growth
Every now and then, I’ll ask AI to critique my work — just for a different perspective. It’s another tool to help me keep growing as an artist and staying consistent in my editing style. But again, AI can’t feel the moment the way I do. It doesn’t know that the blurry photo of a toddler running into their parent’s arms is the shot — but I do.
So, Will AI Replace Me?Not a chance.
At Deanna Dunham Designs, the soul of my work is human connection — your story, your memories, your real-life moments. AI tools just help me stay organized, efficient, and a little less sleep-deprived while doing it all.
If you’re curious about what I use or want to chat more, I’m always happy to share! Until then, feel free to bookmark this post... or send it to the next techy husband who asks.
